Monuments

Duomo di Milano

The most theatrical Gothic cathedral in Europe — 135 spires, 3,400 statues, and a roof you can walk across for views across the Lombardy plain to the Alps. Five centuries in the building; still the centre of everything.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

The world's most beautiful shopping arcade — an 1877 iron-and-glass cathedral of commerce connecting the Duomo to La Scala. Spin on the bull mosaic for luck, drink a €20 Campari, and feel absolutely no regret.

Castello Sforzesco

The fortress that made Milan a Renaissance capital. Built by the Visconti, expanded by the Sforzas, and home to Michelangelo's last sculpture — the Rondanini Pietà — left unfinished at his death.

The Last Supper

Leonardo da Vinci's 15-metre mural in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Only 25 visitors at a time, 15 minutes each. Book months ahead — this is the single most important reason to come to Milan.

Teatro alla Scala

The world's most famous opera house, opened in 1778. Even if you can't get a ticket to a performance, the museum is extraordinary — Verdi's top hat, Toscanini's baton, costumes from three centuries of opera.

Bosco Verticale

Two residential towers clad in 900 trees and 20,000 plants — the most awarded skyscraper of the decade and the defining image of new Milan. Best seen from the Biblioteca degli Alberi park at golden hour.

Naviglio Grande

Milan's canal quarter — a 12th-century waterway now lined with bars, studios, and trattorias. Sunday antique market, aperitivo at 6pm, dinner at 9pm: this is the authentic Milan rhythm.

Santa Maria delle Grazie

The UNESCO World Heritage church that holds the Last Supper. The exterior is a Bramante masterpiece; the interior is quietly extraordinary even before you enter the refectory.

Musées

Pinacoteca di Brera

Milan's greatest painting collection — Raphael's Marriage of the Virgin, Mantegna's Dead Christ, Caravaggio's Supper at Emmaus. Set in an 18th-century palace in the bohemian Brera neighbourhood.

Fondazione Prada

Rem Koolhaas's conversion of a 1910 distillery into Milan's most provocative contemporary art space. The gold-leafed Haunted House, the permanent collection, and the rotating shows are all extraordinary.

Museo del Novecento

20th-century Italian art in the Palazzo dell'Arengario, directly overlooking the Duomo. The permanent collection includes Boccioni, Modigliani, and De Chirico — and the views from the top floor are unsurpassed.

Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia

Leonardo da Vinci's engineering notebooks brought to life — wooden models of his flying machines, hydraulic devices, and war engines fill an entire wing. The largest science museum in Italy.

Triennale di Milano

Italy's museum of design, fashion, and applied arts in a 1930s Giovanni Muzio building in Parco Sempione. The temporary shows on industrial design, architecture, and contemporary fashion are always worth a visit.

Pinacoteca Ambrosiana

One of the world's oldest public libraries plus a painting gallery with Leonardo's Portrait of a Musician, Raphael's cartoon for the School of Athens, and Caravaggio's Basket of Fruit.

Leonardo3 Museum

The world's largest collection of Leonardo da Vinci's machines — over 200 reconstructions built from his original codices, from flying machines and armoured vehicles to hydraulic pumps and musical instruments. Interactive and tactile, unlike any conventional art museum.

Cafés and houses along the Navigli at golden hour

Bere on Navigli

The Naviglio Grande benchmark for aperitivo — Campari spritz, Aperol, and an antipasto spread that makes dinner redundant. Arrive before 19:00 for a canal-side table.

Ratanà

The most honest Milanese kitchen in the city — risotto alla milanese made with real bone marrow and saffron, ossobuco as good as your nonna's, and a wine list that won't embarrass you. Book a week ahead.

The Bosco Verticale, a few minutes from Isola

Ugo Bar

Isola's neighbourhood institution — Campari negroni, panini stuffed with mortadella, and a terrace where half the neighbourhood shows up on warm evenings. No frills, no tourists, completely correct.

Trattoria Milanese

Since 1933, unchanged. Cotoletta alla milanese the size of a dinner plate, cassoeula in winter, and a room full of Milanese families on Sunday. The most authentic traditional trattoria still operating in the centre.

Langosteria

Milan's finest seafood restaurant — raw bar, oysters flown in daily, and a crudo menu that sets the benchmark for the city. The place fashion designers go after the shows. Book months ahead for dinner.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, where Cracco is located

Cracco in Galleria

Carlo Cracco's flagship inside the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II — contemporary Italian tasting menus in one of the world's most beautiful buildings. The risotto with gold leaf is justified.

Vietnam Mon Amour

The best bowl of pho in Milan, hands down. A tiny Isola institution that proves Milan's diversity is one of its great strengths. Arrive hungry; leave profoundly satisfied.

Osteria dell'Acquabella

A Porta Venezia osteria that hasn't changed its menu, its prices, or its attitude in thirty years. House wine in carafes, pasta e fagioli, and a room of regulars who've been coming since before you were born.

Vie nocturne

Tout voir

Plastic

Since 1980, the most important club in Italy — electronic music, experimental performances, and a crowd that includes every interesting person in Milan on a Saturday night. There is no dress code; there is absolutely a vibe code.

Tunnel

An abandoned railway tunnel converted into Milan's most respected techno club — concrete walls, serious sound system, and a crowd that is there specifically to dance. Arrive after 02:00.

Blue Note Milano

The Italian outpost of the legendary New York jazz club — international jazz acts, excellent cocktails, and the city's most sophisticated after-dinner evening. Dinner + show is the correct way to do it.

Nottingham Forest

The most inventive cocktail bar in Italy — theatrical presentations, unexpected ingredients, and Dario Comini behind the bar creating drinks that have influenced bartenders across Europe. Not cheap; absolutely worth it.

Teatro Armani

Giorgio Armani's private theatre hosts the city's most prestigious cultural events — fashion shows, film premieres, and concert performances. Check the programme; an invitation to any event here is Milan at its most exclusive.

Navigli Bar Strip

The three kilometres of canal-side bars from Naviglio Pavese to Naviglio Grande is Milan's living room at night — aperitivo at 18:00, dinner at 20:00, dancing at midnight. The most atmospheric night out in the city.
